Plasma and vacuum technologies are widely used in the microelectronics, communications, biomedical and other modern manufacturing industries. This programme provides scientists and engineers working in these technologies with the skills relevant to process operations, design and development.

The M.Sc. offers structured module-based training at postgraduate level. It is a part-time, web-based programme designed to upgrade and update the knowledge and skills of graduates currently employed or proposing to seek employment in relevant industries.

It is delivered jointly by Dublin City University and Queen's University Belfast.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To provide a sound theoretical basis for an understanding of plasma and vacuum technology and modern industrial applications.
  • To develop skills which can be applied in a wide range of manufacturing environments.
  • To give you the specialised knowledge needed to maintain and improve existing industrial processes as well as the ability to introduce relevant new ideas and techniques.
  • To encourage you to develop the self-directed learning skills required to maintain and develop your expertise in the rapidly changing modern industrial environment.
  • To deliver courses through web-based techniques in order to maximise accessibility for those in full time employment.

Programme Structure:

This one year, part-time programme is delivered entirely through web-based methods and each of the six modules (four compulsory, two optional) is run in a time controlled manner with specific times set aside for tests and for delivery of written material. All modules are examined at DCU, QUB or an approved examination centre. A research project must also be completed.

Attendance by students at DCU or Queen's University Belfast (QUB) is not mandatory. Your award is based on performance in assignments, in-course tests, on-line participation, written examinations on the course modules and on the research project. M.Sc. students are encouraged to pursue a research project of interest to their employer. This project may be conducted at the employer's facility. Individual programme modules are also available as stand alone certified courses on a pay per module basis to applicants who hold a relevant 3rd level qualification (e.g. technician's diploma), or have relevant industrial experience.

Additional Information

There are two entry points to the programme each year: September and February. Students determine how many modules to take each year, and these must be agreed beforehand with the course chairperson. At the point of entry, students register for the Masters. Students can exit with a Graduate Diploma once they complete 60 credits. Module availability will be decided before each semester.

This course deepens your knowledge of vacuum and plasma systems used in industry. Graduates are typically employed as scientists, process engineers or line managers in manufacturing, using high-capital state-of-the-art equipment in industries such as semiconductor fabrication. These specialist postgraduate qualifications provide advantages in career advancement and in increasing job satisfaction by building expertise in the subject area.

Entry Requirements:

A first or second class honours degree (or its equivalent) in physics, chemistry or a related engineering discipline is required for entry into the M.Sc. programme.

Applicants with other qualifications are considered on a case by case basis and employment in a relevant industry can be taken into account to determine eligibility for entry. Candidates may be interviewed.
